What an AI-native law firm looks like, stage by stage
Adding a chatbot to a firm does not make it AI-native. A firm is AI-native when every stage of a matter, from the first lead to closing and back, has a place where the work gets done.
The argument
Most firms meet AI as a window: a place to paste a question and get an answer back. That helps with the question. It does nothing for the matter, because the matter lives everywhere else: in the inbox, in WhatsApp, in Word, in the lawyer's head.
An AI-native firm turns that around. The matter is the unit. Each stage of it has a place, the work for that stage is done there, and the lawyer reads and decides rather than assembles.
The ten stages
1. Getting leads. Referrals, the firm's site, its own network.
2. A lead arrives, and someone speaks with them. By hand, the lawyer reads, replies and asks the intake questions one by one.
3. The engagement letter, with payment up front where the firm asks for it.
4. The client's data and documents, to open the casework.
5. The case itself: the drafting.
6. Continuous data from the client while the case runs.
7. Filing.
8. Serving the matter: the dates, the follow-ups, keeping the client informed.
9. Closing it.
10. Continuing: the next matter, and the client coming back.
Signatures sit in almost every one of them.
What Volares has for each
This is what Volares is built around. A client's email opens a lead with a summary and a first reply drafted for a lawyer to read and approve. The engagement letter is drawn from the firm's own template, after a conflict check, and signed electronically; on signing, the matter opens with the facts from the conversation and the signed letter on it. The client gets an upload link that files straight into the matter.
Drafts are written to the firm's own Standard, and incoming contracts are reviewed against the firm's playbook, with every finding citing its clause. A matter is closed from the conversation, with its open work listed first, and when a client returns, the next matter opens on the same client record.
Every stage can also be reached from the firm's own Claude or ChatGPT. Every run we describe here was on a demonstration matter.
Where the gaps still are
Some stages are not built yet, and saying so is part of the point. Volares does not find a firm's leads for it, collect the client's payment, file with a court's system or record service of process. Those are the stages we are working on.
